When a translation isn’t the answer
Ask why, not just what.
Some questions a dictionary can’t take. Why that tense? Why that particle? Would anyone actually say this out loud? Ask, in plain English, about the very thing you’re reading, and get an answer that knows the passage.

Why is it le problème and not la problème? I thought words ending in -e were feminine.
Good instinct. That rule holds most of the time, but
problème comes from Greek, and the
Greek-derived -ème and
-ame nouns stayed masculine:

le thème,
