A1
想, 要, 会, 能 — wanting and being able
The difference between 想 and 要, and between 会 and 能, in Chinese — what each one actually claims, and why their negatives are not symmetrical.
All four sit in front of the main verb and none of them change form. The difficulty is not the grammar, it is choosing between them.
想 — feel like, would like
The softest of the four. It expresses an inclination rather than a plan, and it is the safe choice for a beginner saying what they want.
我想喝咖啡。
Wǒ xiǎng hē kāfēi.
I’d like a coffee.
我想去中国。
Wǒ xiǎng qù Zhōngguó.
I want to go to China.
On its own, without another verb, 想 means to miss someone: 我想你.
要 — want, going to, need to
Firmer. Depending on context it is a want, a decision already taken, or an obligation — and the line between them is not always drawn.
我要一杯咖啡。
Wǒ yào yì bēi kāfēi.
I’ll have a coffee.
我要走了。
Wǒ yào zǒu le.
I’m leaving.
Ordering with 要 is normal and not rude, but 想 is gentler where you have the choice — 我想要 splits the difference and is very common.
我不要去。
我不想去。
不要 is not the negative of 要 in the way you would expect. In front of a verb it is an instruction — don’t — so 你不要去 means don’t go. 我不要去 lands as a flat refusal rather than I’d rather not.
会 — know how to
A learned ability. Something you were once unable to do and now can, because you learned it.
我会说中文。
Wǒ huì shuō Zhōngwén.
I can speak Chinese.
他不会开车。
Tā bú huì kāichē.
He can’t drive.
会 also carries will in the sense of likelihood — 明天会下雨, it’ll rain tomorrow — which is a separate use worth recognising early even though it takes a while to produce naturally.
能 — able to, in these circumstances
Not about skill. 能 is about whether conditions allow it: time, permission, physical possibility.
我今天不能去。
Wǒ jīntiān bù néng qù.
I can’t go today.
这儿能抽烟吗?
Zhèr néng chōuyān ma?
Can you smoke here?
我能说中文。
我会说中文。
能 says nothing is stopping you — which, said about a language, implies your mouth is working rather than that you learned it. It becomes right again the moment circumstances are the point: 我感冒了,不能说话.
The short version
- 想 — I feel like it
- 要 — I intend to, or I need to
- 会 — I learned how
- 能 — nothing is stopping me
If you are unsure between 想 and 要, use 想. If you are unsure between 会 and 能, ask whether the sentence is about a skill or about a situation.
